Overview

Generators are specified against the prime mover and the network, not against a nameplate rating alone. Short-circuit contribution, transient reactance and the excitation response all have to match what the protection system upstream expects.

The range covers standby sets from 100 kVA up to cogeneration and industrial units above 10 MVA, in air- and water-cooled constructions.

Machines can be supplied with an AVR matched to the plant requirement, including droop and cross-current compensation for parallel operation.

Key characteristics

Sustained short-circuit current

PMG-assisted excitation maintains fault current long enough for downstream protection to discriminate.

Parallel operation ready

Droop and cross-current compensation available for running in parallel with other sets or with the grid.

Non-linear load capability

Winding pitch selected to limit harmonic content when supplying converter and UPS loads.

Matched to the prime mover

Inertia and torsional characteristics reviewed against the engine or turbine before release.

Construction

  • Brushless exciter with rotating diode bridge and surge suppression
  • Two-thirds pitch winding for low harmonic distortion
  • Single or twin bearing, SAE flange coupling
  • Class H insulation with Class F temperature rise
  • Anti-condensation heaters as standard

Available configurations

  • Single-bearing (SAE) or twin-bearing construction
  • Air-cooled IC 01 / IC 611, water-cooled IC 81W
  • AVR with droop, isochronous or cross-current compensation
  • PMG excitation for sustained fault current
  • Marine classification on request

Monitoring options

  • Winding Pt100 × 6 and bearing Pt100 × 2
  • AVR fault and excitation status contacts
  • Anti-condensation heater monitoring
  • Optional partial-discharge coupler provision
